2020 General Election Overview

You need to be enrolled to vote in the election and referendums.

To enrol and vote, you need to be 18 years or older, have lived in New Zealand for more than one year continuously at some time, and be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident.

Key election dates

Election day will be Saturday 19 September. If you’re in New Zealand, you’ll be able to vote when advance voting starts on Monday 7 September. If you’ll be overseas at the time, you can vote from overseas from Wednesday 2 September.

At the 2020 General Election, you can vote for the parties and candidates you want to represent you in Parliament.

There will be two referendums

The referendums will be held alongside the election. At the voting place, you will be given a voting paper for the election and a voting paper for the referendums.

You can vote on whether the recreational use of cannabis should become legal. You can also vote on whether the End of Life Choice Act 2019 should come into force, giving people with a terminal illness the option of requesting assisted dying.
