Severe Weather Update From Auckland Emergency Management

Auckland Emergency Management

Summer storms

As you know, summer storms can arrive quickly, bringing strong winds, heavy rain, hail, lightning and rough seas. It’s important to keep up-to-date with weather forecasts.

AEM’s latest public education marketing and communications campaign encourages Aucklanders to be prepared for when summer storms hit. This includes radio advertising, social media and website content. You might have seen some messages already.

Weather this week

Right on cue, there’s the storm activity this week. Our team is actively monitoring the weather situation alongside our partner agencies and providing updates on the AEM website (see the banner at the top of the homepage) and Facebook page.

Here are some standard messages you might also share.

During storm events:

  • Stay up to date with forecasts, follow MetService New Zealand
  • Plan travel carefully, drive to the conditions and never drive through flood water
  • Do not walk or play in flood water, it can be contaminated, and contain hidden hazards and debris
  • Prepare for power outages – keep your devices charged and if you rely on medical equipment, make sure your back up plan is ready
  • If your life or property is at risk, phone 111
  • For blocked drains or stormwater issues phone Auckland Council on 09 301 0101
  • Report trees down on public land using ‘Report a problem’ on aucklandcouncil.govt.nz
