Auckland’s Bus Numbers Are Breaking Records

With petrol sitting above $3 a litre, Aucklanders are ditching their cars in droves, and the numbers back it up.

Auckland buses hit a record 7.5 million trips in March, with strong numbers holding into April. Cycle counts at monitored sites are also up around 20%. At peak times, around half of all people crossing the Harbour Bridge are now in a bus rather than a car.

Auckland Transport says the shift kicked in almost immediately after fuel prices started climbing sharply in mid-March. The big question now is whether enough Aucklanders have broken the habit of solo driving that the numbers stick once fuel prices eventually ease.
