Excavation of the underpass starts soon

NORTHERN CORRIDOR IMPROVEMENTS UPDATE

Work on excavating the SH1-SH18 underpass is to begin soon. When complete, the underpass will provide a direct motorway to motorway connection for those travelling from the north and heading west.

Excavation is being undertaken in stages with the first stage expected to take three months to complete. During this time, the soft clay will be excavated from under the new reinforced concrete roof slab and between the two reinforced concrete piled walls.

Before our team begin the ‘Big Dig’ they’ve had to undergo a two-day training course to ensure they have the skills required to work in the underpass environment. This has included learning fire suppression techniques, self-rescue techniques and basic ventilation principles.

The photo is of Josh our Site Engineer and Paul our Foreman wearing their self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR) during their training.  Any worker entering the underpass exclusion zone is required to carry the SCSR on their person at all times.
