Māori Language Week, 13th – 19th September

Te reo Māori has been an official language of Aotearoa since 1987. Every year Māori Language Week is held in September, starting on a Monday and ending on the following Sunday.

Māori Language Week (Māori: Te Wiki o te Reo Māori) is a government-sponsored initiative intended to encourage New Zealanders to promote the use of the Māori language, which, along with New Zealand Sign Language, is an official language of the country.

This special week is an opportunity for the concentrated celebration and promotion of te reo Māori, helping to secure its future as a living, dynamic, and rich language.
