More New Zealanders to get hardship support

Income limit changes: financial support available to more New Zealanders

The Government has agreed to temporarily increase income limits for hardship assistance, meaning more people may be eligible for hardship assistance from 1 November 2021 until 28 February 2022.

This increase means casual or part-time workers, or people who aren’t already getting financial support may be eligible for help with their immediate or emergency costs. (Note: Income thresholds for Emergency Housing Special Needs Grants, Transition to Work Grants and the Course Participation Allowance aren’t changing.)

From 1 November, people new to MSD can click on their “check what you might get guide.” They’ll be asked some easy questions about their costs, then MSD will let them know about Work and Income payments they may be able to get. They may wish to ask a friend or family member to help use the guide.
