Auckland Records Highest May Cycling Numbers in a Decade

Auckland has recorded its busiest May for cycling in ten years, according to new data released by Auckland Transport (AT).

10 Years! Highest May cycling numbers in a decade!

Automated counters across the city’s cycling network registered a marked increase in bike trips last month, continuing a pattern of year-on-year growth in active transport use.

“Improved connectivity between cycleways has encouraged more people to use bikes for commuting and short-distance travel.”

– Tania Loveridge, Head of Active Modes, Auckland Transport

Loveridge noted that cycling is increasingly being adopted as a cost-effective and reliable alternative to driving, particularly as transport costs rise. The figures reflect both the expansion of cycling infrastructure and a broader shift in how Auckland residents are choosing to travel.

AT reports that the May data aligns with broader trends observed across the past year, with several corridors showing sustained increases in daily usage. The agency says the results strengthen the case for continued investment in safe cycling routes — adding that each new link in the network typically leads to measurable growth in ridership.

Despite seasonal fluctuations, AT describes the long-term trajectory as clear: cycling numbers in Auckland are climbing, and the city is now experiencing some of its strongest participation rates in more than a decade.
