Driving into Auckland during peak times could soon cost you, with thecity council progressing three congestion charging options that range up to $7 a trip. These are the three options that have been shortlisted:
City centre: $3-$4 entering during morning peak, $2-$3 leaving in the afternoon. Cuts congestion 2-4%, saving about four minutes a trip.
City fringe: Covers Newmarket, Newton, and possibly Ponsonby and Parnell, including Auckland Hospital. $5-$6 in the morning, $2-$3 in the afternoon, cutting congestion 3-6%.
Core motorways: From the Harbour Bridge to Point Chevalier and Mount Wellington. $5-$7 charges, cutting congestion up to 13% and saving up to 12 minutes.
Public feedback opens in mid-November, with a final option confirmed in 2027 and ministerial approval expected in 2028. If approved, charging could start as early as 2030.
