Businesses across North Harbour have embraced sustainability in a big way, with a fantastic amount of interest and sign-ups for the latest business inorganic collection held on 6 and 7 May 2026.

Run by Business North Harbour in partnership with Abilities Group, the initiative helps businesses responsibly dispose of unwanted office furniture, equipment and electronic waste, with collections organised directly from business premises.
A total of 55.5m³ of inorganic material was collected during the clean-up, with approximately 47m³ recycled and only 8.5m³ sent to landfill. The collection included a large volume of office furniture such as desks, chairs, filing cabinets, drawer units, tables, and whiteboards, along with a wide range of electronics including computers, monitors, printers, TVs, speakers, cables, and other office equipment. Household and kitchen appliances, workshop scraps, pallets, signage, blinds, and various general household and office items were also removed.
One of the standout results from this collection was the significant amount of office furniture with several items still in reusable condition. Plus electronic waste, or e-waste, diverted from landfills. Items such as old computers, monitors, phones, cables and servers made up a large portion of collected materials, highlighting growing awareness around responsible disposal practices.
E-waste is one of the fastest-growing waste streams globally, and when sent to landfill, it can release hazardous materials into the environment.
Abilities Group plays a key role in ensuring these materials are processed responsibly. The Auckland-based recycling charity provides meaningful employment opportunities for people with disabilities while helping businesses and communities reduce waste. The organisation diverts more than 1.2 million kilograms of material from landfill each year through recycling and resource recovery programmes.
The inorganic collection accepts a wide range of items, including furniture, appliances, electronics and office equipment, making it an easy and practical sustainability solution for local businesses. Collected items are carefully sorted by the team at Abilities Group, with materials either recycled, dismantled for resource recovery, repurposed into new products, or, where possible, reused to extend their lifespan and reduce waste going to landfill.
Following the success of the May collection, businesses are encouraged to sign up early for the next inorganic collection taking place in September – Inorganic Collection – Business North Harbour
What a fantastic result for the local business community and for the environment!
