Facts about AEDs

Every day Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) kills 12 New Zealanders whose lives could have been saved by an affordable, easy-to-use device.
The survival rate is less than 1% using cardiopulmonary resuscitation alone. If an Automated External Defibrilator (AED) is applied within 3 minutes, 75% of SCA patients will survive.

SCA can affect anyone of any age, background and fitness level – it does not discriminate, and gives no warning as to when it will strike.

Green Dots: AEDs available 24/7 (often via an external cabinet)

Red Dots: No regular opening hours or no 24/7 opening hours

Pull handle, apply pads, shock.

When someone has a heart attack (sudden cardiac arrest or SCA), an AED can be used to deliver a short, powerful electric shock to help the heart regain its natural rhythm. Anyone can quickly learn to use an defibrillator – you don’t need to be a medical professional. Using a St John AED is as easy as 1, 2, 3:

  1. Pull handle
  2. Apply pads
  3. Shock.
