Wellness in the Workplace: Keep it Simple

Business Capability Workshop

Laurinda Howarth and Cherise Pendergrast, WellnessWorks, 9th July

Business North Harbour’s (BNH’s) annual survey of members showed that workplace health and wellbeing is an extremely high priority for property owners, employers and employees. It was appropriate then that BNH’s first post-lockdown event was all about this topic.

Hosted by WellnessWorks, this lunchtime session encouraged attendees to focus on “progress, not perfection”. It was both practical and interactive, sharing illuminating statistics (e.g., the ROI for every $1 spent on workplace health and wellbeing is $6) and straightforward steps that individuals and businesses could start immediately.

Laurinda and Cherise guided everyone through The Six Pillars of Wellness, and asked:

1. How are you fuelling?

2. How are you moving?

3. What are you thinking?

4. How are you connecting?

5. How are you restoring?

6. How are you celebrating?

Amongst the numerous tips they offered were:

Eat a rainbow: a wide selection of fruits and vegetables ensures a good spread of vitamins, minerals and fibre.

Have walking meetings outside: a burst of fresh air and vitamin D can be invigorating, as you stroll around the block (building) with your team.

CREATE goals: break these into manageable beginning, middle and end steps.

Enjoy a good night’s sleep: switch off those screens at least one hour before going to bed.

Take a moment: acknowledge your hard work before you move on to the next item on your “to do” list.

Participants clearly enjoyed this workshop, commenting that they felt “energised and rejuvenated” and “motivated”. They further remarked that they were “looking forward to putting this learning into practice” and that it had been “an awesome course with great trainers”.
